A "Goner'" for Geran wins for RBC
Greg Geran lined a 3-0 pitch for a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning Saturday to give Red Bank Catholic (15-6) a dramatic 4-3 victory over Ocean (14-6) in a Monmouth County Tournament quarterfinal.
""It kept going and going and going,'' said RBC coach Tony Martinez of the 380-foot drive over the fence in center at Count Basie Field.
RBC will play the winner of the Freehold Township-Wall game later this week in a semifinal game.
An Eric Hinkle RBI double gave Oceean (14-6) the lead in the top of the eighth inning.
Keith Weinkofsky belted a two-run home run for Ocean in the first inning, his fifth home run in the last seven games.
Hinkle took the 2-0 lead into the seventh when RBC tied the game with four consecutive singles, the last two run-scoring hits by Tim Griswold and John Oriolo.
Winning pitcher John Menna (5-0) went the distance.
